Bethel Park Triathlete in Paralympics

BETHEL PARK, Pa. (KDKA) — As the Paris Paralympic Games approach, retired Marine officer Eric McElvenny from Bethel Park is set to represent the United States in the triathlon. Known for his resilience, McElvenny credits his strength to the support of those around him, stating, "The people in my life have taught me how to be resilient and when something happens to look for opportunity in it." This marks McElvenny's second appearance at the Paralympics, and he has received assistance from the VA Pittsburgh to enhance his performance. "At the end of the day too, you can put him on a different foot if he wants that type of dynamic, that kind of energy return," said a representative from the VA. This support has been crucial in his journey as he prepares for the upcoming competition. McElvenny emphasizes the importance of family in his training, particularly the encouragement from his wife. "There are days I come home and I might have had a rough workout, and she's the one that brings me up," he shared, highlighting their shared commitment to his goals. Additionally, McElvenny's fellow Marines have rallied behind him, with one reaching out to confirm plans to attend the games in Paris. The 2024 Paralympic Games are scheduled to take place from August 28 to September 8, where McElvenny hopes to showcase his determination and skill on an international stage.
