Solapur Airport Progress Review by MoS Civil Aviation
- The construction of Solapur Airport is in its final stages, with a review meeting held to discuss the project's progress.
- The DGCA has granted in-principle approval for the operating license, with a final inspection scheduled soon.
- Efforts are underway to make the airport operational quickly, providing air services to Solapur residents.
Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol conducted a review of the Solapur Airport's progress, indicating that the construction is nearing completion. A meeting in New Delhi addressed various issues related to the final phase of the project, including technical matters and the status of work. Discussions also focused on the UDAN-RCS routes and potential airline operations connecting Solapur to Goa, Mumbai, and Hyderabad. The government has invested approximately ₹50 crore in upgrading the airport, with training for necessary personnel currently underway. Officials have been directed to expedite the licensing process with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which has granted in-principle approval for the operating license. A final inspection is anticipated soon. One significant obstacle to the airport's operations was the presence of a 92-metre-tall chimney from a nearby sugar unit, which has been demolished following legal challenges. However, a smaller chimney remains, and its removal is essential for the airport to operate at full capacity. Currently, the airport features a 2,100-metre runway, accommodating 72-seater aircraft, but operational limitations mean planes can only carry up to 60 passengers due to load penalties. Efforts are being made to ensure that the airport becomes operational as soon as possible, providing residents of Solapur with access to air travel. The completion of the airport is expected to enhance regional connectivity and stimulate local economic growth.
