Kendrick Bourne set for return to Patriots offense soon
- Kendrick Bourne is recovering from a torn ACL injury sustained in Week 8 of the previous season.
- Head coach Jerod Mayo reported that Bourne is making progress and is close to returning.
- Bourne's return is anticipated to strengthen the Patriots' receiving corps, which has struggled early in the season.
The New England Patriots have struggled to integrate their receivers into the offense during the 2024 season. However, head coach Jerod Mayo has indicated that veteran wide receiver Kendrick Bourne is nearing a return to the field. Bourne has been recovering from a torn ACL injury sustained in Week 8 of the previous season, which sidelined him for the remainder of the year and kept him out of training camp this summer. Starting the 2024 season on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, Bourne is not eligible to practice until after Week 4. Mayo's recent comments suggest that Bourne has made significant progress in his recovery, stating, "He's done a good job and he's close." This news comes as the Patriots prepare for their Week 3 matchup against the New York Jets. Before his injury, Bourne was a reliable target for the Patriots, recording 37 receptions for 406 yards and four touchdowns in the 2022 season. Since joining the team in 2021, he has been a consistent contributor, amassing 127 catches for 1,640 yards and 10 touchdowns over 41 games. His best performance came in his first season with the team, where he achieved career-highs in receptions and yards. Upon his return, Bourne will join a competitive receiving corps that includes DeMario Douglas, rookies Ja'Lynn Polk and Javon Baker, K.J. Osborn, Tyquan Thornton, and Kayshon Boutte. His presence is expected to enhance the Patriots' offensive capabilities, although it may also lead to increased competition for playing time among the receivers.
