TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Baker Mayfield showcased his skills in a strong performance during the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 24-14 victory over the Miami Dolphins in their preseason finale on Friday night. The 29-year-old quarterback, who led the Bucs to the playoffs last season, orchestrated a 70-yard drive in just seven plays, culminating in a 4-yard touchdown run by Rachaad White. Mayfield completed all three of his passes for 54 yards before sitting out the remainder of the game, allowing both teams to evaluate younger players vying for roster spots. On the opposing side, Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa also played one series, completing five passes for 51 yards and a touchdown. Tagovailoa, who recently signed a lucrative four-year, $212 million extension, had a standout season in 2023, leading the NFL in passing yardage. Mayfield, now on a three-year, $100 million contract, previously excelled on a one-year deal, throwing for over 4,000 yards and 28 touchdowns last season. In the absence of star receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, who were sidelined due to injuries, Miami's Mike White and Skylar Thompson shared quarterback duties. Thompson threw two touchdown passes, while Kyle Trask took over for Mayfield, completing 17 of 24 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns. The Dolphins will kick off their regular season at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars on September 8, while the Buccaneers will host the Washington Commanders, featuring rookie Jayden Daniels, on the same day.
