Family of Zimbabwean Girl Killed in Diplomat's Accident Seeks Apology

The family of Ruvarashe Takamhanya, an 11-year-old girl allegedly killed by a US diplomat in a road accident in Zimbabwe, is calling for the diplomat to return to the country and apologize in person. Ruvarashe was reportedly struck by the diplomat's vehicle while walking to school in Dema, located 40 kilometers southeast of Harare, on June 3. A spokesperson for the US State Department expressed condolences, stating that the embassy is cooperating with local authorities regarding the incident. Juliana Vito, Ruvarashe's mother, recounted the moment she learned of the tragedy from neighbors and rushed to the scene, only to find the driver absent. She expressed disappointment that the diplomat had not reached out directly, with his colleagues offering apologies on his behalf. Vito described feeling that the driver was not genuinely remorseful, wishing he would have approached her personally to discuss the incident. Police spokesman Paul Nyathi noted that the diplomat initially indicated a desire to rest before contacting investigators. He emphasized the expectation for those involved to take responsibility for the tragic accident. Ruvarashe's mother lamented the loss of her daughter, who had aspirations of supporting her family, stating that her hopes for the future have been shattered. While the family seeks compensation, their primary desire is for the driver to meet with them and explain the circumstances surrounding the accident.
