Chapelcross Nuclear Site to Transform into Green Energy Hub

A comprehensive masterplan has been introduced to convert the former Chapelcross nuclear plant site near Annan into a "green energy hub." This initiative aims to revitalize the area by creating high-value jobs and boosting the local economy. The project has garnered significant support, with over £15 million in funding from both the Scottish and UK governments, highlighting its importance to regional development. The ambitious plan encompasses hydrogen production and storage, alongside the establishment of energy and enterprise campuses. The Chapelcross site, which ceased electricity generation in 2004 and saw its cooling towers dismantled shortly thereafter, spans more than 210 hectares (520 acres). Local leaders are optimistic about the potential of this transformation to provide sustainable employment opportunities. Dumfries and Galloway Council leader Gail Macgregor emphasized that the masterplan articulates a "clear vision" for job creation in the region. She noted the collaborative efforts with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and South of Scotland Enterprise, aiming to position the site as a "powerful force for change" in the energy sector. In addition to the green energy hub, plans are underway for a battery energy storage facility on adjacent land, further enhancing the site's potential as a center for renewable energy innovation. This development marks a significant step towards a sustainable future for the Chapelcross area and its community.
