Afghan Women’s Summit – an act of defiance in itself

Over 100 Afghan women convened in Tirana, Albania, for a summit focused on women's rights, just weeks after the Taliban imposed new restrictions prohibiting women from speaking in public. Many attendees fled Afghanistan following the Taliban's takeover in 2021, and they now face a profound sense of hopelessness regarding their homeland. A message from a Kabul activist highlighted the dire situation, revealing that women are increasingly taking their own lives due to despair, with families too fearful to report these tragedies. During the summit, participants expressed their defiance by chanting against gender apartheid and singing a song advocating for work, bread, freedom, and education. Fawzia Koofi, a former Deputy Speaker of the Afghan Parliament and a key organizer of the event, emphasized the necessity for Afghan women to unite in order to exert pressure on both the international community and the Taliban. She acknowledged the challenges of building consensus among women divided by ethnic and political lines. Despite the difficulties, the gathering served to strengthen the resolve of the women present, who share a deep longing for their country. Farzana Kochi, a former MP, reflected on the emotional toll of the situation, expressing that the pain of losing their homeland is profound and enduring. The women recognize that while it may be challenging to negotiate with the Taliban, their collective presence at the summit is a crucial step toward fostering solidarity and hope. The summit represents a significant act of defiance against the oppressive regime, highlighting the resilience and determination of Afghan women to advocate for their rights and the future of their country.
