A vibrant new mosaic has been unveiled near London Bridge, crafted from 250,000 hand-placed glass pieces. Designed by Adam Nathaniel Furman, the 57-meter artwork, titled "In a river: A thousand streams," aims to reflect the rich diversity of the local community. The project, which began in 2020, was brought to life by students and alumni from the London School of Mosaic and is expected to attract around 2.1 million viewers annually. Furman emphasized the mosaic's connection to the area's history and its contemporary cultural landscape. Positioned adjacent to the River Thames, he drew inspiration from the diverse communities that have historically inhabited the area. "It's this amazing flow that is just like the flow of the wonderful River Thames that flows past it," he remarked, highlighting the ongoing vibrancy of the local population. The project saw the involvement of approximately 70 core volunteers over three years, alongside contributions from school children and young offenders. Furman described the endeavor as "epic," given the meticulous effort required to assemble the vast number of glass pieces. Additionally, Furman acknowledged the influence of Eduardo Paolozzi's mosaic work at Tottenham Court Road station from the 1980s, which inspired his artistic vision. The installation stands as a testament to community collaboration and the celebration of cultural diversity in the heart of London.
