India showcases energy governance achievements at BRICS meeting

In May 2025, India participated in the BRICS Energy Ministers' Meeting held in Brasília, Brazil. The delegation, led by Union Minister for Power and Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, highlighted India's advancements in the energy sector, focusing on energy security, accessibility, and sustainability. India aims to showcase its significant progress, including a 90% increase in power generation capacity, reaching a total of 475 GW, with a goal of 900 GW by 2032. The discussions during the meeting were framed under the theme 'Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance.' The emphasis was on collaborative efforts to tackle pressing global challenges, particularly energy security. Minister Manohar Lal referred to India's position as the world's third-largest producer of solar and wind energy and reaffirmed its commitment to cleaner energy practices, including a milestone of 20% ethanol blending. Moreover, India presented its investments in smart grid infrastructure, renewable energy projects, and innovations aimed at reducing emissions. Lal invited BRICS nations to collaborate on the newly launched domestic Carbon Credit Market, showcasing India's intention to lead sustainable practices in the energy sector further globally. The minister called for international cooperation regarding the efficient use of fossil fuels, emphasizing the inevitable role they play in the energy mix of developing countries. India's plans extend beyond the immediate future, with ambitions for a significant increase in nuclear energy capacity and pursuing aggressive green hydrogen targets. The dialogue during this meeting is seen as part of India's broader strategy to reinforce its leadership position within the BRICS framework and advance the collective agenda of developing nations in energy governance.
