Apple has announced a tentative collective bargaining agreement with its first unionized retail store in the United States, located in Towson, Maryland. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers' Coalition of Organized Retail Employees revealed on Friday that the three-year contract includes an average pay increase of 10% and additional benefits for employees. The agreement is subject to approval by approximately 85 employees, with a vote scheduled for August 6. The union's negotiating committee expressed optimism about the deal, stating, "By reaching a tentative agreement with Apple, we are giving our members a voice in their futures and a strong first step toward further gains." This development follows a strike authorization by workers in May, who had been in negotiations with management for over a year without satisfactory results. The Maryland store is one of only two unionized Apple locations in the country, with employees voting to unionize in June 2022. A second store in Oklahoma City, which unionized later with the Communications Workers of America, has yet to secure a contract. The recent unionization efforts reflect a broader trend of labor movements gaining traction across various industries, including notable victories at Amazon, Chipotle, and Starbucks locations nationwide. However, many of these unions are still in the process of negotiating contracts with their respective employers.
