77-Year-Old Climate Protester Sent to Jail, Denyer Calls It Unjust
- Carla Denyer, a Green MP, criticizes the imprisonment of a 77-year-old climate protester.
- The activist affiliated with Just Stop Oil is sentenced to jail, sparking controversy.
- Denyer deems the jail term disproportionate and a waste of resources.
A 20-month prison sentence for 77-year-old climate activist Gaie Delap has drawn sharp criticism from Green MP Carla Denyer, who described the punishment as disproportionate and unjust. In a letter to Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, Denyer highlighted the ongoing issue of severe sentencing for climate protesters, emphasizing that Delap's actions were peaceful and aimed at raising awareness about the climate emergency. Delap, a resident of Bristol, was sentenced for her involvement in disruptive protests on the M25 in November 2022, which aimed to pressure the government into banning new fossil fuel exploration in the North Sea. Denyer pointed out that the government has since opted not to issue new licenses, suggesting that Delap's advocacy aligns with Labour's environmental goals. She argued that the harsh sentence does not serve justice or deter future activism against oil and gas extraction. The protests, organized by Just Stop Oil, resulted in significant traffic disruptions, affecting approximately 709,000 drivers. Delap was among several activists sentenced last month, with five identified ringleaders receiving a total of 21 years in prison. Additional trials for other alleged leaders are forthcoming. Denyer expressed concern over the financial implications of Delap's imprisonment, calling it a waste of resources amid government budget cuts and overcrowded prisons. She stated that the desperation driving Delap's actions is shared by many, underscoring the need for a more compassionate approach to climate activism. The Home Office has been approached for a response.
