Green activists have raised alarms over extensive mining operations along the Vasai Creek in the Bhayandarpada region of Thane, Maharashtra, citing concerns for environmental degradation and local safety. In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, the Watchdog Foundation highlighted the potential risks associated with these activities, particularly in light of recent landslide tragedies, such as the one in Kerala that claimed over 300 lives. The activists argue that the lessons from such disasters have not been adequately heeded. The letter emphasizes that the rampant mining poses a significant threat to the ecological balance of the area, which serves as a critical habitat for various species and a vital resource for local communities. The activists warn that ongoing mining could lead to severe consequences, including soil erosion, water contamination, and an increased risk of landslides. The loss of vegetation cover due to mining activities further heightens these dangers, making the region more susceptible to natural calamities. In their appeal, the activists called for immediate and decisive action from the state government to regulate and monitor mining operations. They stressed the importance of implementing stricter environmental regulations, conducting thorough impact assessments, and ensuring compliance with sustainable practices. Additionally, they requested a comprehensive survey to evaluate the potential risks of landslides and other natural disasters in the area. Godfrey Pimenta, founder of the Watchdog Foundation, underscored the urgency of the situation, stating, “The safety of our citizens and the preservation of our environment should be our top priorities.” He expressed hope that with government intervention, further degradation of the region could be prevented, thereby safeguarding the lives and livelihoods of local residents.
