In the United States, a recent agreement has been established between the Massachusetts Port Authority, Uber, and Lyft concerning ride-hailing fares to Logan Airport. Starting July 1, 2025, the one-time per-trip passenger fees will see an increase from $3.25 to $5.50. This decision follows a proposal made by Massport earlier this year, which suggested raising the fee to $7.50, prompting backlash from both riders and drivers alike. Concerns were expressed over the potential financial burden on consumers. Uber driver JT Thomas criticized the fee hike, stating that it was not a favorable idea for consumers in general. On the contrary, frequent rider Joleena Smith suggested that adjustments to such changes were necessary given the circumstances. Another rider, Sean Burns, remarked on the significant addition of cost that this fee represents. Amid the increase in fees, Massport CEO Rich Davey noted that this new agreement aims to offer alternatives for easier transportation to Logan while addressing traffic issues surrounding the airport. Enhanced features are part of the new arrangement, including more time for drivers to accept pick-up requests and options for shared rides at the airport. Brendan Joyce, Public Policy Manager at Lyft, voiced partial agreement with the fee increase, viewing it as a step towards improving the rider experience despite concerns about rising costs. One of the hallmark benefits of this agreement will be the ability for passengers to be directly dropped off at terminal doors rather than the previously designated parking garage, which was considered a significant convenience, especially in inclement weather. Responding to these changes, Josh Gold, Senior Director of Public Policy & Communications at Uber, promised continued collaboration with Massport to further enhance rider convenience and minimize inconvenience to travelers. This agreement was set to be discussed and voted upon in the Massachusetts Port Authority Board meeting scheduled for Thursday, March 20, 2025.
