GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. — Authorities have confirmed the recovery of the body of Leticia A. Castillo, a 20-year-old woman from Albuquerque, New Mexico, marking the third fatality in Grand Canyon National Park since late July. Castillo's body was discovered on Tuesday, approximately 150 feet below Twin Overlooks, and has since been transported to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. Park officials reported that Castillo likely entered the park around August 3, shortly before her tragic death. The circumstances surrounding her passing are currently under investigation by both the National Park Service and the county medical examiner. This incident follows two other fatalities in the park within a week. On July 31, a 20-year-old man from North Carolina fell approximately 400 feet from the South Rim while on a mission trip with his church. The day after, a 43-year-old man from Missouri died while attempting a BASE jump from Yavapai Point, a maneuver that is prohibited within the park boundaries. The recent string of deaths has raised concerns about safety in the park, particularly regarding the risks associated with hiking and prohibited activities like BASE jumping. Park officials continue to emphasize the importance of adhering to safety guidelines to prevent further tragedies.
