France Names New Coaches for Women's and U-21 Football Teams
- France appoints Laurent Bonadei to lead the women's national football team.
- Thierry Henry's former assistant takes charge of the U-21s football team in France.
- The new coaches were appointed following the departures of Renard and Henry post-Olympics.
On August 23, the French Football Federation announced significant changes in leadership for its national teams. Laurent Bonadei, previously an assistant to Hervé Renard, has been appointed as the head coach of the women's national team. This decision comes in the wake of Renard's departure after the team’s disappointing quarter-final exit at the Paris Olympics, where they were defeated by Brazil. In a parallel move, Gérald Baticle has been named the head coach of the Under-21 team. Baticle, who served as an assistant to Thierry Henry during the Olympics, has a wealth of experience, having previously worked with Lyon and coached Angers from 2021 to 2022. Henry stepped down from his role earlier this week for personal reasons, prompting the need for Baticle's appointment. The French Football Federation emphasized the importance of continuity and expertise in their selections. Philippe Diallo, the federation's chief, stated that they sought coaches who possess a deep understanding of French football and a commitment to high standards. Bonadei's contract extends until 2027, positioning him to lead the team through the upcoming European Championship in Switzerland and the World Cup in three years. The changes come after a challenging period for the French women's team, which also faced a quarter-final exit in the 2023 Women's World Cup and a loss to Spain in the Women's Nations League final earlier this year.
