Story

Midfielder Niko Sigur has officially changed his national team eligibility from Croatia to Canada, following an application to FIFA. This decision allows him to be considered for selection in Canada’s upcoming friendlies against the United States and Mexico on September 7 and 10. Although currently nursing a minor injury, Sigur may still participate in the Canadian camp to familiarize himself with the team and coaching staff. In a statement, Sigur expressed gratitude for his time with the Croatian national team, acknowledging Croatia as a football powerhouse and his family's homeland. However, he emphasized a growing desire to represent Canada, the country where he was raised and began his football career. Sigur thanked the Croatian Football Federation for their understanding and support regarding his decision. Despite his commitment to Canada, Sigur noted that he would only be fully dedicated to the national team if he plays in the CONCACAF Nations League quarter-finals in November. Previously, in May 2023, he had committed to Croatia, citing his family's heritage as a significant factor in his decision. Sigur has a solid football background, having made nine appearances for Croatia’s Under-21 team, including participation in the 2023 UEFA Under-21 Championship. His move to Canada strengthens the midfield, joining established players like Stephen Eustaquio and Ismael Kone, as new head coach Jesse Marsch aims to build on the team's recent successes.
