ALLEN PARK, Mich. – Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell provided an optimistic update on Pro Bowl running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who is recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during practice last week. Campbell indicated that Gibbs is "trending the right way" and is expected to return to practice next week, following the Lions' final preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on August 24. Gibbs, 22, had to exit a night practice on August 12 due to the leg injury, although the specifics of the incident remain unclear. The second-year player made a significant impact during his rookie season in 2023, rushing for 945 yards and 10 touchdowns, alongside 316 receiving yards and a touchdown. His potential absence would be a considerable blow to the Lions' offensive strategy. In addition to Gibbs, the Lions have faced a series of injuries affecting key players, including Pro Bowl tight end Sam LaPorta and several others. Despite these setbacks, Campbell remains hopeful that these players will be ready for the season opener against the Los Angeles Rams on September 8. "Our plan is to get him going next week," Campbell stated regarding Gibbs. He expressed confidence that many injured players would return in time for practice before the Rams game, emphasizing the team's commitment to getting back to full strength ahead of the regular season.
