After several delays, actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has finally released the trailer for her upcoming film, "Emergency," which showcases her portrayal of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The 2-minute-53-second trailer highlights the tumultuous period of Gandhi's leadership, particularly focusing on the controversial Emergency she imposed in the 1970s. Ranaut's performance appears to capture the essence of Gandhi, as she declares, "India is Indira and Indira is India," reflecting the complex relationship between the leader and the nation. The trailer also introduces notable figures from Gandhi's era, with Shreyas Talpade portraying Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan. Mahima Chaudhry returns to the screen as Pupul Jayakar, a close confidante of Gandhi, while the late Satish Kaushik plays Jagjivan Ram in his final role. Vishak Nair's portrayal of Sanjay Gandhi stands out, drawing attention with his compelling screen presence. In addition to historical context, the trailer touches on contemporary issues, including references to Khalistanis, a topic Ranaut frequently addresses in her public life. Her character's assertion that she received "only hate" from the country may also reflect Ranaut's own experiences with criticism in the entertainment industry. Originally slated for an October 2023 release, "Emergency" has been postponed to September 6, 2024. This film not only marks Ranaut's directorial debut but also serves as a pivotal moment in her career, as its success could significantly influence her future in both cinema and politics.
