Mexico is positioning itself as a crucial player in the automotive industry, particularly in the electric vehicle (EV) sector. BMW's newest factory in San Luis PotosÃ, Mexico, is set to begin production of its Neue Klasse generation of EVs, which are designed specifically for Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs). This manufacturing will start in 2027, making BMW the first premium automaker to produce EVs and batteries in Mexico. The decision to establish production in Mexico comes despite BMW's existing production plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The shift indicates BMW's commitment to making Mexico a global center for car production, leveraging its free trade agreements to facilitate export to various markets. As of 2023, Mexico exports more cars to Germany than to China or the U.K., showcasing its growing importance in the automotive landscape.
