Snakes found in Devon woods pose threat to children and pets

Two ball pythons were discovered in Huntsham Wood, Tiverton, Devon, within a span of 48 hours, raising concerns among experts about the potential danger to children and small pets. The first snake was found by a motorist on August 30, followed by the second on September 1. Both snakes appeared well-fed, suggesting they had been cared for prior to being abandoned. Experts believe the snakes were likely released by irresponsible owners, as they are not native to the British environment. Ball pythons, which are non-venomous constrictors native to sub-Saharan Africa, can grow up to 6 feet long. While they are not large enough to pose a lethal threat to adults, they could potentially attack smaller animals and children. The zoo staff from Tropiquaria Zoo in Somerset were called to rescue the snakes, emphasizing the cruelty of abandoning such exotic pets, especially with the onset of autumn, which poses survival challenges for them in the wild. Zoo director Chris Moiser criticized the actions of the owners, highlighting that there are numerous organizations willing to take in exotic animals when owners can no longer care for them. He pointed out that a simple online search could have provided humane alternatives to abandonment. The incident has prompted police to launch an animal cruelty investigation, although they currently have no active leads.
