Story

An event aimed at encouraging women and girls to explore careers in engineering is set to take place at Hull Guildhall on 9 October. Organised by the Women in Manufacturing and Engineering (WiME), the initiative seeks to address the underrepresentation of women in STEM fields, despite a growing demand for qualified professionals in these areas. The Humber region, where the event is being held, has a notably high contribution of manufacturing to employment, at 17%, compared to the national average of 9%. Dr. Kirsty Clode, chair of WiME, emphasized the importance of showcasing available opportunities and dispelling common misconceptions about careers in engineering. The event will feature over 30 regional employers, providing a platform for attendees to learn about various roles that require skills such as innovation and problem-solving. Former science teacher Carrie Grimbleby shared her positive experience with the WiME initiative, highlighting how it helped her secure a position in the renewable energy sector. She encouraged women and girls to consider careers in manufacturing and engineering, regardless of their age or background. The free event, scheduled from 16:30 to 18:00 BST, aims to inspire attendees by connecting them with industry professionals and showcasing the diverse career paths available in engineering and manufacturing. This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote gender diversity in sectors that are crucial for economic growth and innovation.
