As the popular series "Yellowstone" approaches its final episodes, Bozeman, Montana, is witnessing a remarkable transformation. Since filming began in 2020, the city has seen a surge in business, tourism, and population growth, presenting both opportunities and challenges. According to Briana Wolfe, the Bozeman Area Chamber of Commerce Tourism and Sales Director, the economic growth has led to increased job opportunities, but the city is also facing rising crime rates, traffic congestion, and public health issues, particularly related to fentanyl use. The population of Bozeman has skyrocketed from approximately 37,300 in 2010 to around 59,050 in early 2023, marking a 56 percent increase. This growth is attributed in part to film commission tax credits and the economic impact of "Yellowstone," which has generated over 10,000 jobs and contributed $730 million to Montana's economy since the pandemic, as reported by the University of Montana. Hollywood producer Scott Duthie noted that Bozeman is now "practically unrecognizable" compared to its former self. Local officials, including Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer, have acknowledged the shift in Bozeman's identity, stating that the area was once a "little secret gem." The increased visibility from "Yellowstone" has attracted a wider audience, further elevating the city's profile. However, this growth has also led to a spike in crime, with Sheriff Springer indicating that the rise in population has corresponded with an uptick in various criminal activities. Real estate trends reflect the city's transformation, with the median price for a single-family home in Gallatin County reaching $940,000. Local experts warn that the rapid growth has contributed to a range of crime issues, as more residents and visitors flock to the area. As Bozeman continues to evolve, the community grapples with balancing economic opportunities against the challenges of urbanization.
