Disney World shuts down iconic attractions for major expansion

Walt Disney World in the United States has announced the closure of several famous attractions, including the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat, to pave the way for a new themed area called Piston Peak. This major change is set to begin on July 7, 2025, marking a significant evolution in Magic Kingdom's landscape since its inception in 1971. The enhancements aim to enhance guest experiences and storytelling, aligning with Disney's commitment to continuous innovation and attraction development. Piston Peak is designed to reflect a national park theme, inspired by the American frontier and the Rocky Mountains, promising an immersive experience featuring towering trees, mountains, waterfalls, and geysers. This new area will allow visitors to explore a visitor lodge, Ranger HQ, and various trails themed after Disney and Pixar's "Cars." Disney's Imagineers have ensured the architecture aligns with the Parkitecture style, enhancing the integration of the built environment with the natural surroundings. In conjunction with this major addition, Disney is also reportedly developing a new land focused on existing Disney villains located beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. This ambitious project will feature two significant attractions, uniquely themed dining experiences, and distinctive shopping options, all wrapped in a darkly magical ambiance, indicating a broadening of thematic diversity within the park. Other notable revitalizations at Disney World include plans to reopen Big Thunder Mountain Railroad with new features next year and the impending debut of Disney Starlight on Main Street, scheduled for July 20, 2025.
