The Dallas Cowboys have made history by becoming the first professional sports team to be valued at over $10 billion, according to Sportico’s 2024 NFL rankings released on Tuesday. The franchise, owned by Jerry Jones, is now valued at $10.32 billion, a significant increase from the previous estimate of $9.2 billion in February. Jones, who purchased the team in 1989 for approximately $140 million, has transformed the Cowboys into a financial juggernaut, despite the team’s struggles to replicate its past Super Bowl successes. Despite their impressive valuation, the Cowboys have faced challenges on the field, with only five playoff wins in the last 28 years. Their most recent postseason appearance ended in disappointment, as they lost to the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card round of the 2023 playoffs. The Cowboys remain a popular franchise, generating an estimated $1.2 billion in revenue in 2023, significantly outpacing the second-ranked Los Angeles Rams, valued at $7.79 billion. The rankings also highlighted other top franchises, with the New York Giants, New England Patriots, and San Francisco 49ers following the Cowboys. The average NFL franchise is now worth $5.93 billion, reflecting a 15.4% increase from the previous year. Notably, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers saw the largest rise in value, while the Los Angeles Chargers experienced a decline. Despite their financial success, the Cowboys face ongoing challenges, including contract negotiations with star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who has yet to reach an agreement with the team.
