Sadler's Wells East is set to open in February 2025 as part of the £1.1 billion East Bank development in east London, aiming to be an inclusive cultural hub for the diverse local community. The inaugural season will feature a dance adaptation of James Baldwin's novel 'Giovanni's Room' by Phoenix Dance Theatre, alongside an immersive rave and a co-production of 'Romeo and Juliet' with Stratford East. Artistic director Sir Alistair Spalding emphasizes the importance of community engagement, highlighting the area's rich cultural tapestry, including South Asian and hip-hop communities. The new venue will prioritize accessibility, with 50% of tickets priced at £25 or less and half of the new roles offered to local residents. This initiative aims to break down barriers and encourage participation from the surrounding neighborhoods. Brianna Morton, co-chief executive, stated that the venue is purpose-built for dance and aims to make a significant impact on the local arts scene. The theatre will also serve as a space for education and community interaction, with open foyer areas designed to invite local residents. Spalding's vision includes creating a welcoming environment where professional and social elements can blend seamlessly. The project has garnered support from London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who views it as a significant milestone in enhancing the capital's cultural offerings. Overall, Sadler's Wells East represents a commitment to fostering creativity and innovation in the arts, aiming to create a vibrant cultural landscape that reflects the diversity of east London and engages its residents actively.
