Pitt Football Coach Revamps Offense for New Season
- Longtime Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi aims to revamp the team's offense with new coordinator Kade Bell.
- The team seeks to improve after ranking last in points and yards in the previous season.
- A fresh approach is expected to bring a new dynamic to Pitt football.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — In a surprising move, Pittsburgh head coach Pat Narduzzi appointed Kade Bell, a 31-year-old former Western Carolina coach, as the new offensive coordinator, breaking from his tradition of hiring established names. Narduzzi emphasized the need for a fresh approach to invigorate the Panthers' offense, which finished last in the ACC in both points and yards last season. "I needed a guy who was going to score points and bring enthusiasm," Narduzzi stated, highlighting the urgency for improvement. The Panthers' struggles were evident, particularly in their inability to effectively utilize tight end Gavin Bartholomew, who chose to return to the team despite the option to transfer. Bartholomew expressed his commitment to the program, acknowledging Narduzzi as the only Power Five coach to offer him a scholarship. "We’re trying to be better than 3-9 because we know that’s not acceptable," he remarked, underscoring the team's determination to restore its competitive edge. Defensively, the Panthers have been formidable, leading the nation in sacks since 2018 with a total of 230. Narduzzi reiterated his commitment to an aggressive defensive strategy, stating, "We’re going to press our corners, our safeties are going to be aggressive in the run and pass game." Looking ahead, the Panthers face a challenging schedule, including key matchups against Clemson, Louisville, and Boston College, as they aim to secure a bowl game appearance after a disappointing previous season.
