- The IMD has issued alerts for intense rainfall in Maharashtra and other states, predicting heavy showers for the next 48 hours.
- Flooding has occurred in Hingoli and Beed due to heavy downpours, with river Bindusara overflowing.
- Maharashtra has experienced above-normal rainfall this monsoon, raising concerns about localized flooding.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for intense rainfall across several states, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. As the monsoon season approaches its end, heavy downpours have led to flooding in parts of Maharashtra, particularly in Hingoli and Beed. The situation worsened on Monday, with river Bindusara overflowing due to the continuous rainfall over the weekend, resulting in a flood-like scenario in Marathwada and Vidharbha regions. The IMD forecasts that the heavy rainfall will persist for the next 36 to 48 hours, with specific alerts for Marathwada and Vidharbha. The weather department has indicated that many areas in Northern Maharashtra and Khandesh will also experience very heavy to extremely heavy rains. This is part of a broader trend, as Maharashtra has recorded 126% of its average rainfall since June 1, with various regions experiencing above-normal precipitation levels. Dr. Mrityunjay Mohapatra, the IMD Director General, noted that successive low-pressure areas are expected to enhance rainfall activity in the state over the next two weeks. The forecast for September indicates that Maharashtra will continue to receive above-average rainfall, which raises concerns about potential flooding in localized areas. In contrast, Mumbai is expected to experience moderate rainfall, with a drop in maximum temperatures observed. The weather conditions are likely to remain cloudy with occasional sunny spells for the next few days, providing some respite from the heavy rains affecting other parts of the state.
