Story

The ongoing saga surrounding wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk may be approaching a conclusion, as NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that the San Francisco 49ers have a trade agreement in place with the Pittsburgh Steelers, pending final approval from the team. The Steelers are reportedly in a favorable position regarding Aiyuk's contract, although the 49ers have also proposed a long-term deal for the talented receiver. Aiyuk's trade rumors have dominated the NFL offseason, particularly after he requested a trade from San Francisco in mid-July due to stalled contract negotiations. Earlier this month, the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots emerged as potential suitors, but Aiyuk declined trades to both teams. Reports indicated that the 49ers were seeking at least two first-round draft picks for the 26-year-old pass-catcher, who had a standout season last year with 75 receptions for 1,342 yards, earning second-team All-Pro honors. If the trade to the Steelers materializes, Aiyuk would become their top receiver, joining a revamped offense that may feature either Russell Wilson or Justin Fields as quarterback. Despite the likelihood of a trade, Aiyuk could still remain with the 49ers, play the 2024 season under his fifth-year option, or secure the long-term contract he desires. Currently, Aiyuk is set to earn $14.1 million this season, significantly below the market value for elite wide receivers, as he seeks an extension in the vicinity of $28 million.
