In December 2024, New York City launched its annual Holiday Nostalgia Rides program, which offers riders a vintage subway train experience. This vintage train, which originally ran on the Eighth Avenue Line, harkens back to the 1930s with its authentic features including rattan seats, paddle ceiling fans, and incandescent light bulbs. Passengers can board the train every Sunday throughout December, specifically on the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th, enjoying a unique way to relive the transit history of the city. The Nostalgia Train operates between the 2nd Avenue-Houston Street station and the 96th Street-2nd Avenue station, switching directions every hour from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This special event marks its 20th year of operation, although it was suspended twice during the pandemic. The goal of the program is to evoke the magic of New York City's transit history, especially during the holiday season, as noted by officials from the New York Transit Museum. The success of this nostalgic experience inspired MetroNorth to introduce its first-ever Holiday Lights Train as well, although that initiative focuses on decorating modern cars with holiday lights. Concetta Bencivenga, the New York Transit Museum Director, emphasizes that this program not only allows travelers to enjoy the city but also to connect with its rich history.
