San Diego FC, the new Major League Soccer expansion team, has secured the signing of Northern Ireland international Patrick “Paddy” McNair on a three-year contract, with an option for a fourth year. McNair, a defender, joins the club as a free agent after concluding his contract with Middlesbrough in June. Additionally, SDFC has arranged a loan for McNair from West Bromwich Albion F.C. for the remainder of the 2024 season. He is expected to join the team in January, pending the acquisition of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 Visa. Tyler Heaps, SDFC’s chief soccer officer, expressed enthusiasm about McNair's addition, highlighting his versatility and experience. “Paddy is another addition to our club that will be invaluable as we prepare for our inaugural season in MLS,” Heaps stated. McNair's leadership qualities, stemming from his role as captain of the Northern Ireland national team, are anticipated to enhance the team's dynamics both on and off the field. The Ballyclare native boasts an impressive career in England, having played for notable clubs including Manchester United, Sunderland, and Middlesbrough, accumulating 274 matches at the club level. McNair expressed his excitement about joining San Diego FC, viewing it as a significant new chapter in his career. He conveyed a strong desire to contribute to the team's success and to help build a legacy that San Diego can take pride in as they embark on their MLS journey in February.
