Los Angeles FC welcomed Olivier Giroud to their roster as the French striker made his debut during a Leagues Cup Round of 16 match against the San Jose Earthquakes on Tuesday night. The 37-year-old came off the bench in the 71st minute, contributing to LAFC's commanding 4-1 victory. Although Giroud had a chance to score in the dying moments of the match, his shot was blocked by San Jose defender Daniel Munie. Giroud, who signed with LAFC in May, had his first training session with the team on August 3. His move to the United States follows an illustrious 18-year career in top leagues across France, England, and Italy, including the last four seasons with AC Milan. With an impressive tally of 285 goals in 716 club appearances, Giroud expressed enthusiasm about his new chapter in MLS. After the match, Giroud reflected on his performance, stating, “I wish I could play even more tonight, but it was a good first step. I’m looking forward to the next game.” He acknowledged the need to regain his fitness and emphasized his commitment to meeting the expectations of the coaching staff. Giroud's recent competitive experience includes appearances for the French national team in the European Championship, where he played as a substitute in four matches. He joins fellow Frenchman and former national teammate Hugo Lloris at LAFC, as the team prepares for their upcoming quarterfinal match against Seattle on Saturday.
