Tesla registers unprecedented sales growth in Norway and Australia

In May 2025, Tesla experienced a significant boost in sales in Norway, with a remarkable 213% increase compared to the previous year. This surge was primarily driven by the popularity of the Tesla Model Y, which has become the bestselling car in Norway for the third consecutive year, largely due to the positive response from consumers towards its updated features and performance. The head of the Norwegian EV Association, Christian Bu, commended the Model Y, citing its advanced all-wheel drive system and ground clearance as ideal for Norwegian driving conditions. In stark contrast, Tesla faced considerable sales declines in several European countries including France, Portugal, Sweden, Denmark, and the Netherlands, with notable drops exceeding 30%. The company attributed this decline to various factors, including public backlash against Elon Musk's controversial engagements and political affiliations that have affected the brand's image in Europe. Meanwhile, the Model Y also showed promising results in Australia, where it debuted in May. There, the Model Y comprised a significant portion of Tesla's total sales, with 3,580 units sold out of 3,897, marking a 122.5% rise over the same month in 2024. This marked Tesla's best sales month in Australia since June 2024, indicating a positive market reception. Despite these positive movements in Norway and Australia, Tesla is still managing strained sales figures in the U.S., where deliveries saw a decrease of 13% in the first quarter of the year, highlighting the mixed performance of the brand on a global scale. Tesla is expected to roll out new initiatives, including its highly anticipated Robotaxi launch in Austin on June 12, which may further influence its sales trajectory and public image in the near future.
