Gloucestershire brass band to represent England in European event

Flowers Band, a brass band from Gloucestershire, has achieved a significant milestone by securing a spot in the 2026 European Brass Band Championships in Austria. This opportunity arose after the band finished second in the 2024 British Open held on September 7, marking their highest placement in the competition's history. Conducted by Paul Holland, the band was the top UK brass band in the contest, showcasing their talent and dedication. The band, consisting of 30 members aged between 17 and 65, travels from various locations including Cardiff, Swindon, Birmingham, Bath, and the Cotswolds. Their success is attributed to a rigorous recruitment process that emphasizes both musical skill and personality compatibility, ensuring a shared commitment to excellence in performance. The band manager, Gregor Spence, expressed pride in representing Gloucester and the West of England on an international stage. The competition in Austria will be particularly challenging, as it requires musicians to perform two test pieces over two days, demanding a high level of stamina and skill. Notably, cornet player Paul Richards received the British Open Best Soprano award for his exceptional artistry, which contributed to the band's overall success.
