Netflix to Adapt Broadway's 'Piano Lesson'

Netflix has released a trailer for "The Piano Lesson," a film adaptation of August Wilson's acclaimed play, which recently enjoyed a successful Broadway revival. The movie features prominent actors Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington, both of whom were integral to the 2022 Broadway production directed by LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Samuel's wife. Notably, Jackson also starred in the play's original 1987 premiere. Denzel Washington serves as the film's producer, expressing pride in his son’s talent and the project’s significance. Malcolm Washington, making his directorial debut with this film, described the adaptation process as both daunting and sacred. He likened it to an "archeological expedition," emphasizing the careful and thorough approach he and his co-writer took in revisiting the Pulitzer Prize-winning material. Their dedication reflects the importance of honoring Wilson's legacy while bringing the story to a new medium.
