The recall encompasses models from the 2018 to 2023 production years, as the cargo rails may detach during a crash, potentially leading to increased injury risks for occupants. The automaker has indicated that dealers will replace the rear cargo rail bolts that secure the rails to the vehicle's body. Notifications to affected owners are expected to begin on August 30, as outlined in documents submitted to U.S. safety regulators. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been informed of the situation, which BMW describes as a rare occurrence. The issue came to light following an “extreme rear crash” involving a 2022 BMW X3 in August 2022. Legal documents related to the incident were served to BMW in March 2023, allowing the company to conduct an inspection of the vehicle.
