Story

The Taylor Wessing Photo Portrait Prize 2024 has announced its shortlist, featuring four photographers selected from a competitive pool of 55 entrants. The esteemed annual award, organized by the National Portrait Gallery in London, recognizes outstanding portrait photography. The shortlisted artists are Adam Ferguson, Tjitske Sluis, Jesse Navarre Vos, and Steph Wilson. One of these photographers will receive an £8,000 commission to create a new artwork for the gallery's extensive portrait collection. The winner of the commission will be revealed on November 12, coinciding with the award ceremony. This year’s event will also see the unveiling of a new portrait by Serena Brown, the inaugural commission prize winner from 2023. The works of the shortlisted photographers, along with contributions from 51 other artists, will be showcased in the Taylor Wessing Photo Portrait Prize 2024 exhibition, running from November 14, 2024, to February 16, 2025. Jesse Navarre Vos, hailing from Cape Town, emphasizes the relational aspect of portrait photography, evident in his collaborative project with his mother. Tjitske Sluis presents a poignant series titled "Out of Love, Out of Necessity," which captures intimate moments with her mother during her final days. Both projects reflect deep personal connections, highlighting the emotional depth that portrait photography can convey. The upcoming exhibition promises to celebrate the diverse narratives and artistic expressions within contemporary portraiture.
