Space Force budget needs drastic increase for future operations

Since its inception over five years ago, the Space Force has been adapting to old military practices while trying to modernize its operations. The office is patterned after the Air Force's Rapid Capabilities Office, which has produced advanced projects such as the X-37B spaceplane. Despite public interest and innovation driven by companies like SpaceX, military contractors have opted out of several recent pitch events led by the Space RCO. Leadership within small companies often struggles due to the lack of security clearances, making collaboration with the Department of Defense difficult. Nevertheless, traditional contractors still play a vital role in project execution and support. The workforce within the Space RCO is mainly composed of federal civilians, and recent reductions in federal jobs directly impact effectiveness, particularly given the small size of the office. Frank Kendall, the Secretary of the Air Force, has underscored that the Space Force’s budget must grow significantly to meet the expanding operational needs in space.
