Union Negotiations for Worker Pay Increases
- RMT union is in talks for pay rises for rail and sea workers.
- Meetings will be held with the Department for Transport, Network Rail, and Ministry of Defence.
- Workers in the rail and sea industry may see salary improvements.
This week, negotiations are set to take place between the Government and the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) regarding pay rises for rail workers and seafarers. The RMT will meet with officials from the Department for Transport on Tuesday to advocate for a pay increase for its members employed by train-operating companies, seeking a resolution for this year without altering existing terms and conditions. RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch emphasized the need to move past the confrontational approach of the previous government, advocating for a reset in industrial relations. He expressed the importance of allowing rail workers and Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) seafarers to focus on their work without the burden of ongoing disputes. The RMT is also scheduled to meet with Network Rail on Thursday to further discuss pay issues and will engage with the Ministry of Defence later in the week to address a pay dispute affecting RFA personnel. These discussions come in the wake of a proposed agreement aimed at resolving a prolonged pay dispute involving train drivers. The Aslef union is currently recommending its members vote in favor of a three-year pay increase totaling 14.5%. The outcome of these negotiations could significantly impact the financial well-being of rail workers and seafarers, as well as the overall climate of industrial relations in the sector.
