Penn Hills Considers New Ordinance Following Hookah Bar Shooting

PENN HILLS, Pa. — In the wake of a tragic mass shooting at Ballers Hookah Lounge and Cigar Bar on June 3, which resulted in two fatalities and seven injuries, Penn Hills officials are taking steps to enhance public safety. The establishment was closed following the incident, prompting local leaders to devise a plan aimed at preventing future violence in the community. Municipal manager Scott Andrejchak emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the mayor and council are committed to reassessing safety measures. The shooting occurred during a busy time, with authorities reporting that between 50 to 100 patrons were present. A 42-year-old security guard has been charged in connection with the incident. In response, officials are considering an ordinance that would modify the operating hours of hookah bars, proposing a midnight closing time as a preventive measure. Andrejchak noted that the planning commission is evaluating this strategy to mitigate risks associated with such venues. Prior to the shooting, the hookah lounge had already garnered a reputation for trouble, with police responding to two non-fatal shootings in the past. The proposed ordinance aims to address these concerns by limiting the proximity of new hookah bars to sensitive locations, including schools, parks, and places of worship. Existing establishments would not be affected by the new regulations, which reflect a proactive approach by local leaders to enhance community safety.
