The EU Delegation in Skopje has officially welcomed Michalis Rokas as the new ambassador to North Macedonia. His arrival marks a significant transition as he takes over from David Geer. Rokas was nominated for this role by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, in April of this year, highlighting the EU's ongoing commitment to strengthening its diplomatic presence in the region. Before his appointment in Skopje, Rokas served as the head of the EU Delegation in Malaysia since December 2020. His extensive experience in foreign affairs spans over three decades, beginning with his involvement in the Directorate-General for External Relations of the European Commission in 1994. This background equips him with a deep understanding of international relations and EU policies. Rokas has held various significant positions, including Chargé d’affaires of the EU and head of the Delegation in New Zealand, as well as leading the Support Department for Delegations at the European External Action Service (EEAS). His diverse experience is expected to enhance the EU's diplomatic efforts in North Macedonia, particularly in light of the country's aspirations for EU integration. The arrival of Michalis Rokas is seen as a pivotal moment for the EU's engagement in North Macedonia, as the region continues to navigate complex political dynamics. His leadership is anticipated to foster stronger ties between the EU and North Macedonia, contributing to the broader goals of stability and cooperation in the Western Balkans.
