A 16-year-old male has been arrested following the stabbing of an Irish Army chaplain, Father Murphy, at a barracks in Galway city on Thursday evening. Reports indicate that the attack occurred while Father Murphy was seated in his car, waiting for the barracks gate to open. At the time of the incident, he was dressed in civilian clothing. Army sentries responded by firing five warning shots and using a baton to subdue the suspect, who is currently in custody at a Garda station in the North Western Region. Due to the suspect's age, he cannot be interviewed until a parent or custodial adult is present. According to sources from Ireland’s The Journal, the alleged attacker made comments regarding Ireland's military involvement in the Middle East during the incident. However, police investigations into the suspect's background suggest that the attack is not linked to terrorism. A mental health assessment is anticipated for the teenager. Fortunately, Father Murphy's injuries are not life-threatening. He took to Facebook to express gratitude for the support he has received, stating, “I’m doing okay; just awaiting surgery. All will be well.” Local councillor Alan Cheevers emphasized the chaplain's strong ties to the community, having served at the Renmore barracks for 12 years. Cheevers expressed concern over the incident, noting that it is particularly alarming given the area's historically low crime rate.
