Space coast congressman sets bold goal for American moon missions

In the United States, Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost Mission 1 is scheduled for launch on January 15, 2025. This mission involves a collaboration with NASA and is part of the Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative, aimed at advancing lunar exploration. The mission aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket will occur at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and is planned to deliver various science and technology payloads. After a transit period of approximately 45 days, the lander will target a landing site near Mons Latreille within Mare Crisium, strategically chosen for its scientific significance. The Blue Ghost lander is equipped to conduct scientific investigations that include technology testing essential for future human missions to the Moon. Apart from lunar subsurface drilling and regolith sampling, the mission is designed to evaluate navigation systems, radiation-tolerant computing, and dust mitigation methods. These investigations are not only crucial for understanding the Moon's environment but also play a role in supporting the broader Artemis campaign, which aims to return humans to the lunar surface. The Blue Ghost mission also seeks to capture unique astronomical events from the lunar surface, particularly during the upcoming lunar eclipse on March 13-14, 2025. The Earth will project its shadow onto the Moon, and the only light reaching the Moon during this event will create a reddish hue, similar to a lunar sunset. The mission will utilize a 360-degree camera to document the phenomenon, showcasing a solar eclipse view from the lunar surface.
