Story

In a pivotal move, Nashik City Commissioner Ashok Karanjkar has been replaced by Collector Jalaj Sharma following a contentious land acquisition case involving ₹55 crore. This transfer aims to break the impasse surrounding several proposed projects worth ₹300 crore that are pending approval from the General Assembly and the Standing Committee. The land acquisition, which was sanctioned by the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) without the priority committee's consent, has drawn significant criticism and is seen as a key factor in Karanjkar's reassignment. The controversy intensified when cheques for the land acquisition were issued overnight, raising concerns among former public representatives and local farmers. The farmers, who are still waiting for compensation for land taken for road development, expressed outrage as the developer's compensation was expedited, leading to protests. The situation escalated to the point where Karanjkar took a 15-day medical leave amid mounting opposition. In response to the growing discontent, MLA Devyani Farande and the NCP faction led by Ajit Pawar have called for an investigation into the land acquisition process. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has ordered an inquiry through the Urban Development Department and has sought updates from Karanjkar. The delay in appointing a competent officer during Karanjkar's absence has disrupted the municipal corporation's operations, prompting the eventual transfer of responsibilities to Sharma after a five-day wait.
