In 2003, an unusual celestial object was first observed 20 light-years away from Earth, designated SIMP 0136. Its characteristics led astronomers to initially classify it as a rogue planet—an object drifting through space without orbiting a central star. However, further assessments suggested that it might be a brown dwarf, which are often referred to as 'failed stars' due to their inability to initiate nuclear fusion despite having formed from collapsing gas clouds. Recently, the James Webb Space Telescope has been deployed to investigate the nature of SIMP 0136 more thoroughly. This powerful telescope utilized its Near-Infrared Spectrograph and Mid-Infrared Instrument to analyze the object's atmosphere across a broad range of infrared wavelengths. The astronomical team published their findings in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, revealing details about the object's brightness variations during two rotations. The observations highlighted specific infrared emissions, which hinted at the possible presence of iron particles deep within SIMP 0136's atmosphere, as well as silicate clusters in the upper atmosphere. Additionally, it was noted that some brighter patches of light could be indicative of an auroral phenomenon akin to those observed on Earth. Johanna Vos, the principal investigator, shared that the ongoing study revealed potential variations in molecular abundances such as methane and carbon dioxide.
