- Her children attend the school where the incident took place.
- The mother disappears after being accused of committing the act.
Scottsdale police are investigating Nubia Gonzalez, a mother of four and former treasurer of the Cocopah Association of Parents and Teachers (APT), who is accused of stealing over $35,000 intended for school activities at Cocopah Middle School. Elected in April, Gonzalez was a well-regarded volunteer within the school community. However, she allegedly transferred funds from the APT to her personal account and has since gone missing, prompting concerns among parents and school officials. Surveillance footage reportedly captured Gonzalez depositing the stolen money into her bank account before she vanished, ceasing all communication through her phones and social media. The APT president discovered the empty account upon returning from a trip on July 2, leading police to believe that Gonzalez had premeditated the theft from the moment she assumed her role as treasurer. Parents have expressed shock and outrage at the betrayal, with some emphasizing the impact of the theft on the children who benefit from the APT's fundraising efforts. Rebecca Ryerson, a parent with a finance background, voiced her disbelief, stating that it is incomprehensible for someone to take funds meant for children's education. In response to the incident, Scottsdale Unified School District officials expressed disappointment and reassured the community that this event does not reflect the integrity of the many dedicated volunteers. They hope the situation will not deter community engagement in supporting educational initiatives as the new school year begins.
