Chevron initiates seabed survey for gas pipeline to Egypt
- Chevron plans to conduct an east Mediterranean seabed survey this summer.
- The survey aims to connect Cyprus's Aphrodite gas field to facilities in Egypt.
- This development positions Cyprus as a new energy supplier for neighboring countries and the EU.
In Cyprus, energy company Chevron plans to conduct a seabed survey in the east Mediterranean during the summer of 2025. This initiative aims to establish a pipeline connecting the Aphrodite gas field, located in the Cyprus waters and estimated to contain approximately 4.5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, to processing facilities located along the coast of Egypt. The decision emerged following a meeting between Chevron CEO Mike Wirth and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, during which various aspects of the project were discussed. Chevron is currently leading the development of the Aphrodite field alongside partners Shell and Israeli NewMed Energy. Earlier this year, in February 2025, Chevron, NewMed, and Shell signed an agreement with Egypt, outlining the overall framework for the development of the Aphrodite gas field. This agreement marked a significant milestone as it followed the approval of a revised production plan by both the Cypriot government and the Chevron-led consortium. The new plan includes the implementation of a floating platform to facilitate gas processing, along with the construction of the pipeline to Egypt. The significance of the Aphrodite field's development was emphasized by President Christodoulides, who described it as a priority for the Cypriot government. He highlighted its importance as a substantial energy source for neighboring countries and the European Union in general. Given the current energy landscape, where stability and reliability of supply are critical, Cyprus aims to position itself as a key player in the energy sector of the eastern Mediterranean region. Chevron's operations represent a vital facet of its portfolio in the eastern Mediterranean, showcasing its commitment to developing energy resources in the region. With Chevron being the only energy company actively operating in Cyprus, Israel, Egypt, and Greece, it is strategically placed to utilize collaborative efforts and shared interests among these nations to promote energy stability and security.
