Shelf to Assist Otters Cross Road

In a significant conservation effort, West Sussex County Council has announced plans to install a specialized shelf under a bridge to facilitate safe crossings for otters. This initiative aims to address the challenges faced by otters, which have recently begun to return to the area after a long absence. Historically, road casualties have been a major barrier to their resurgence, as otters often traverse roads on foot instead of using existing waterways. The proposed ‘mammal shelf’ will be constructed in a culvert beneath the A272, strategically located near one of the county's few breeding populations of otters. Councillor Deborah Urquhart, who oversees environment and climate change initiatives, emphasized the importance of this project, highlighting that the revival of otter populations is a notable conservation success story. She noted that cleaner rivers and improved habitats have contributed to their comeback, but the threat posed by busy roads remains a critical concern. The council's initiative is part of a broader collaboration with the National Trust and Arun & Rother Rivers Trust, reflecting a commitment to enhancing wildlife safety and promoting biodiversity in the region. By reducing the number of otter road casualties, the project aims to support the successful re-establishment of these native mammals in West Sussex waterways. The installation of the shelf is scheduled for this autumn, marking a proactive step towards ensuring the long-term survival of otters in the area and fostering a healthier ecosystem.
