Shiite Pilgrims Gather in Karbala

KARBALA, Iraq (AP) — On Saturday, millions of Shiite Muslims gathered in Karbala to commemorate Arbaeen, marking the death of Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad. Hussein is revered for his defiance against the Umayyad caliphate, which ultimately led to his death in battle. As of Friday, over 3 million pilgrims had entered Iraq, with heightened security measures in place to ensure their safety during this significant religious observance. This year's Arbaeen was particularly somber, overshadowed by the ongoing war in Gaza, which has claimed over 40,000 lives. The conflict, now in its 11th month, has raised concerns about a potential regional escalation, especially following the recent death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Despite these tensions, many pilgrims expressed a sense of unity and shared grief over the plight of Palestinians, emphasizing the importance of solidarity within the Shiite community. The pilgrimage, which takes place on the 20th day of Safar, culminates at the Imam Hussein Shrine, a site of historical significance where Hussein and his half-brother Imam Abbas were killed. Pilgrims from various countries, including Iran, Azerbaijan, and Pakistan, converged at the Iraq-Iran border crossing of Mandali, highlighting the event's international appeal. While the atmosphere was filled with devotion, the pilgrimage was marred by a tragic bus accident in central Iran earlier in the week, resulting in 28 fatalities and numerous injuries. Despite the challenges, the spirit of camaraderie and remembrance prevailed among the pilgrims.
