Story

In a significant shift in plans, the rocket manufacturing company Orbex has paused its construction of a spaceport in Sutherland, Scotland, to focus on operations at the more developed SaxaVord Spaceport in Shetland. The decision was made public recently, with Orbex stating that their first rockets will now be launched from SaxaVord, which has advanced further in development and is already conducting engine tests. Orbex, which is based in Forres, Moray, explained that this move is strategic, as it aims to streamline its operations and support achieving a first launch goal set for 2025. The planning permission for the Sutherland Spaceport was granted in November 2020, and initial construction work had begun last year. However, the company has expressed its intention to retain the lease for the Sutherland site, indicating that while operations at Sutherland are paused, the option to develop this location further remains open for the future. This long-term leasing strategy reflects a cautious approach as Orbex continues to assess the viability and potential of maintaining infrastructure at Sutherland. Phil Chambers, the chief executive of Orbex, highlighted that despite the pause at Sutherland, the company remains committed to expanding its presence in the North of Scotland. He noted that focusing efforts on SaxaVord would ultimately benefit the overall UK and Scottish space industry by enhancing capabilities and fostering additional commercial opportunities. He described the decision as a 'win-win', providing SaxaVord with a reliable customer and likewise supporting Orbex’s ambitions to refine its launch vehicles and services. Frank Strang, the chief executive of SaxaVord Spaceport, welcomed the announcement, emphasizing that the ambitious plans of Orbex align with the operational readiness of SaxaVord. As the UK and Scottish governments have already invested substantial resources into the Sutherland Spaceport project, the implications of Orbex's decision could have broader effects on future space ventures and investments in the region. There are optimistic projections that launches from SaxaVord might commence as early as 2025, positioning the site as a hub for upcoming space activities and further developing the UK's space capabilities.
