— As the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Games approaches, basketball teams from Lille and Villeneuve-D’Ascq are making their way to the event without significant travel disruptions. The French women’s basketball team, already in Paris, expressed pride in representing their sport, with player Emma Meesseman highlighting the honor of being a flag-bearer at her second Olympics. Greek basketball star Giannis Antetokounmpo, also a flag-bearer, sidestepped travel issues by avoiding train travel altogether. Meanwhile, most of Germany’s men’s team opted for buses to reach the ceremony, having never intended to use trains. The U.S. women’s team traveled via Eurostar from London to practice at Pierre Mauroy Stadium before heading to Paris, while the U.S. men’s team is also based in the capital. The Australian men’s team is set to face Spain in their opening group play game, prompting them to stay close to the stadium. In contrast, both the Canadian men’s and women’s teams decided against attending the opening ceremony due to logistical challenges. Player Kayla Anderson noted the difficulties of waiting and standing, emphasizing the importance of preparation ahead of their games, particularly against the host nation, France. Despite missing the ceremony, Canadian player Alexander expressed her support for her team from afar, acknowledging the unique experience of the Olympics while prioritizing their competitive edge.
